Prime minister Manmohan Singh promised on Wednesday that his government will table the report of the Ranganath Mishra Commission on Religious & Linguistic Minorities in the current session of parliament. The issue has figured prominently in parliament ever since DNA published details of recommendations made by the panel. A growing number of MPs are demanding that the report be tabled.
On Wednesday, Mulayam Singh Yadav and other Samajwadi Party members raised the issue in Lok Sabha. “This report was submitted in 2007, but the government is deliberately sitting on it. Some papers have already published details of the report, why is it being hidden from parliament? PM must tell us why his government is shying away from making the report public?” Yadav said.
Manmohan responded, “I take note of the sentiments of the members who have raised the demand. We will place the report before the House before the present session ends.”
The issue also figured in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
Justice (retd) Mishra has recommended 15 % reservation for minorities in educational institutions, government jobs and social welfare schemes such as NREGA and Prime Minister’s Rozgar Yojana. He has also recommended that of the 15% minority quota, 10% should go to Muslims.
