The Maoist directive asking its cadres to undergo vasectomy operations is a form of "violence and oppression" unleashed upon them, Home Minister P Chidambaram said on Tuesday.

"This is not a new report... there have been reports in the past that Naxals exploit young girls... (and) of Naxalite cadres committing torture on cadres, taking away young boys and forcibly recruiting (them). This is one another kind of violence and oppression they unleash upon young cadre," Chidambaram said when he was asked about the statement of few surrendered Naxals in this regard in Chhattisgarh's Kanker yesterday.

"It just shows the character of the Naxal movement that they indulge in many different forms of violence and oppression even though they claim that they fight oppression," he said.

The surrendered Naxals had yesterday revealed that they are while they are allowed to get married they are forced by their senior leaders to undergo vasectomy surgical procedure to prevent them from having children.

Six hardcore Maoists, including four women, who are the members of the Bastar divisional committee, had surrendered at Kanker district headquarters.

"Now, this is a report that we have based on statements made by some surrendered people that they were subjected to vasectomy surgery procedures... surgical procedure. The state government will have to follow it up to find out where it was done, which hospital, which doctor and I am sure in course of time that information also will be available," Chidambaram said.
