Sarkhej police arrested Novad Bhagwan and Altaf (names changed), the two car drivers who killed a pedal rickshaw driver in a 'car race' near the electricity sub-station, Makarba Road on Friday.

Both the accused were released on bail on Saturday. BR Patel, police inspector at Sarkhej police station, said, “Both the accused were booked for rash driving and causing death due to negligence.”

According to sources in Sarkhej police, Bhagwan (19), a Sarkhej resident belongs to a family who is in the construction business. He is a third year B.Com student. Altaf (17), a class XI student, lives in Minar Bungalows in Fatewadi area of Juhapura.

Both the boys belong to affluent families who dabble in the vegetable trade in their area and own land in Dholka and Virangam areas of Ahmedabad district.

Police traced the addresses of Altaf and Bhagwan from their car registration numbers and subsequently arrested both.

Altaf and Bhagwan were racing their cars at around 3pm on Makarba Road on Friday. Altaf lost control of his Maruti Swift car and mowed down a pedal rickshaw puller who died on the spot. Both the drivers fled from the scene leaving their cars behind following which an angry crowd set the cars ablaze.

Police believe both of them were just racing each other and were not drunk. However relevant tests will be conducted.
