The striking lawyers in Surat have decided to extend their stir by one more day, even as a delegation of Surat District Bar Association (SDBA) has been summoned to Gandhinagar by the registrar of Gujarat High Court for talks.

The court proceedings remained disrupted in Surat for the second consecutive day on Thursday as lawyers affiliated with SDBA struck work and boycotted court proceedings to press for their demand to transfer district & sessions judge RP Dholaria. However, no untoward incident was reported during the stir.

The SDBA members protested outside the Surat Family Court and prevented lawyers from doing court work. The SDBA had on Tuesday declared that its members would keep away from court work for two days. However, the association decided this afternoon to extend the strike by one more day. This was after SDBA received a letter from HC registrar for talks on the contentious issue.

"Nine senior members of SDBA will travel to Gandhinagar to hold talks with the Registrar tomorrow. However, we have decided to extend the strike by another day, which means our members will keep away from court work tomorrow also," Mahendrasinh Atodaria, president of SDBA, said.

The SDBA will also hold another general meeting at 12 pm on Saturday to apprise members about the meeting with the registrar and its outcome, Atodaria added. The lawyers are on warpath with the judiciary alleging humiliation by sessions judge RP Dholaria and his subordinate judges. Matters came to a boil after the bar's office bearers and the public prosecutor were not invited to a Lok Adalat on June 27.
