India on Thursday summoned Sri Lankan high commissioner to seek clarification on his remarks about alleged connection between some Tamil parliamentarians and LTTE, after which the envoy apologised for causing “discontent” and “distress” to the MPs.

“I would like to apologise to the MPs of Tamil Nadu if I have caused any discontent or concern or distress in their minds. I feel sorry about that...That is not what I meant. What I meant was the LTTE lobby groups abroad and in this region carrying on a campaign of disinformation (against Sri Lanka),” Prasad Kariyawasam, Sri Lanka’s high commissioner to India said after meeting senior MEA officials.

He said this campaign of disinformation against Sri Lanka is aimed at disrupting the process of reconciliation in Sri Lanka following the end of the war against LTTE in 2009.

The ministry had earlier summoned him to explain the remarks made against Tamil Nadu political parties. India expressed “concern” over the remarks that have come at a time when the government is facing extreme pressure from DMK and AIADMK to vote in favour of a UN Human Rights Council resolution against Sri Lanka.

In a statement on Wednesday to both houses of Parliament, external affairs minister SM Krishna said India will have to consider the implications of its actions carefully and “any assertions on India’s part may have implications on its historically friendly relations with a neighbouring country.” The high commissioner was earlier quoted by media as saying that the “friendship” of some of the DMK, AIADMK MPs and MDMK’s Vaiko with the LTTE may have led them to carry on a campaign against Sri Lanka. Kariyawasam said Shringla “expressed very clearly the concerns of the Indian government” over his reported remarks.

On his country’s expectation from India on the US-sponsored resolution at the Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva, he said, “I have discussed...India is a responsible power and it will take right decision.”
