The Banaskantha superintendent of police Raghvendra Vats has filed an affidavit in the Gujarat high court informing it that the Amit Jethawa murder case will now be supervised by joint commissioner of police, detection of crime branch, Mohan Jha. Incidentally, Jha is also a member of the special investigation team (SIT) constituted by the Gujarat high court to probe the Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

Vats, who will be investigating the case under Jha’s supervision, also sought an extension of two months to file a report in the case. Earlier, the court had directed the police to submit their report in the case by November 28.

On Tuesday, the petition filed by Jethawa’s father for a CBI inquiry into his son’s murder had come up for hearing before the bench of Justice Jayant Patel. However, Justice Patel referred it back to the registry observing that the case might have been mischievously transferred to his court as the earlier bench had passed some important orders in the matter. The case has now been transferred back to the registry to be placed before the earlier court. Earlier, the high court had directed the police to have the case investigated under the supervision of an officer of ADJP rank. Accordingly, Jha has been entrusted the supervision of the case.

When asked about the choice of Jha to supervise the case, Jethawa’a father, Bhikhu Jethawa, said that he had full faith in the judiciary and that his fight is for justice. “Even if the supervising officer tries to hamper the investigation, Vats, the Banaskantha SP, is a strong man and I have full faith in him,” he added.

RTI activist Amit Jethawa was shot dead in Ahmedabad in July last year. His father had filed a petition in the high court seeking a CBI inquiry into his son’s murder. Jethwa’s father had alleged that the BJP MP, Dinu Solanki, had played a role in the murder of his son and that the police were trying to save him.
