The two major parties in the country appear to be scrambling to attack and defend Amitabh Bachchan. In all this, however, the small sideshow of Amar Singh and his deteriorating relationship with his “elder brother” Amitabh Bachchan, appears to be going unnoticed. Singh is in the habit of referring to himself as Bachchan’s younger brother.

For years, the two were joined at the hip, appearing at political and filmi functions together. After Amar’s exit from the Samajwadi Party (SP), it was supposed that Jaya Bachchan, a Rajya Sabha MP from the party, would also leave with him. But this did not happen and Sunday’s rally in Delhi, where Amar Singh taunted Jaya, reflects the equation between them.

A source close to Amar says he is upset that Jaya did not follow him out of the SP. Instead, Amitabh seems to have charted his own path with the BJP by becoming brand ambassador for Gujarat. “The fallout has its roots in 2008, when the SP saved the UPA government. Jaya was upset and reminded Amar Singh how the Congress had humiliated her family over the years, culminating in the office-of-profit issue which made her resign from Rajya Sabha,” the source said.

The proximity between the Bachchans and the BJP is also raising eyebrows. Apart from becoming brand ambassador for Gujarat, Amitabh may also lend his voice to a CD on Narmada. What’s more, Jaya has already participated in a Narmada cleaning drive organised by BJP MP Anil Dave.
