Supreme Court lawyer and Jammu and Kashmir politician Bhim Singh has written to Pakistan prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani offering free legal aid and expressing readiness to appear for him in the Pakistani apex court to contest the latter’s case if he desires so.

“I have offered free legal aid in case the supreme court of Pakistan persists further vis-a-vis the contempt case (of Gilani). I know the chief justice of Pakistan very well personally also. As a barrister, I can appear in any court in the commonwealth countries. I have no problem, If he (Gilani) likes I appear for him in the Pakistan supreme court,” Bhim Singh told DNA.

Singh said there is nothing in the Constitution of Pakistan that obliges a prime minister to resign over a ‘civil contempt’ as no member of parliament or a minister shall be disqualified in such a situation.

“Your adversaries may appreciate the amount of your wisdom and courage that you have demonstrated in defence of democracy in Pakistan which has suffered a jolt whenever the politicians faulted”, Singh said in his letter to Gilani.

An internationally reputed lawyer, Singh was engaged by former Yugoslavian president Slobodan Milosevic in the UN criminal court in The Hague. However, he was not allowed to argue in the court.

Singh, chairman of the J&K National Panthers Party (NPP) which has three MLAs in the assembly, had earlier filed a Habeas Corpus petition in the Supreme Court against the “illegal, improper, constitutional and mala-fide detention of Anna Hazare and his team”.

Singh has been the personal friend of slain Iraqi president Saddam Hussain and was not allowed to represent him during his trail. Prof Singh contested the Lok Sabha polls from Udhampur constituency which he eventually lost. The chairman of the J&K National Panthers Party (JKNPP) has been the counsel for the militant Farooq Ahmad Dar alias Bitta Karate, nicknamed “butcher of Kashmiri pandits”.

This time around Singh has showered praises on Pakistani premier describing him the defender of the Constitution and the law of the land “by staking your own political status”.

“Your (Gilani) walking as a commoner to the Supreme Court chamber and then exercising your patience on the announcement of the judgment against you deserve a serious attention of every citizen of Pakistan. You may be the first Prime Minister to defend the parameters of the Constitution of Pakistan at the cost of so many privileges that you may have as a premier,” reads Singh’s letter.
