One of Ishrat Jehan's relatives lashed out at the state police for labeling Ishrat as a 'terrorist' and killing her in a fake encounter. According to Rauf Lala, maternal uncle of Ishrat, the findings of SIT have proved that Ishrat was not a terrorist. "Now the truth is in front of the nation. SIT's findings in the fake encounter prove that Ishrat was a martyr, not a terrorist," he said.

He also expressed happiness after today's development in the case. "We have been saying all along that we are innocent, but no one listened to us. Now, the stain on Ishrat and her family's honour is finally washed away," said Lala. Lala, who has been following the developments closely, was present in the Gujarat high court on Monday when the SIT report was submitted to the court.

Lala also alleged that crime branch officials harassed them when they came to Ahmedabad in 2004 after learning about the encounter. "When we came here, Vanzara and his men welcomed us with vengeance and tortured us in their office in Gaikwad Haveli. We felt that police officials wanted to give us the same treatment as that given to Ishrat and other innocent youth," said Lala. He also recalled the horror of seeing the dead body of Ishrat in the Civil Hospital. "They not only killed our daughter, but our whole family. It's a long fight, and we are determined to restore her honour," said Lala.

According to him, Ishrat belonged to a poor family which suffered unnecessarily. "She came from a very poor family. They couldn't ask for more if they got food for the day. How can such a girl become a terrorist? I am also thinking of asking for compensation from the government for all the suffering the family has undergone," said Lala, who lives in Mumbai and visits the city for the proceedings of the court.
