The Gujarat high court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing Ishrat Jahan encounter case, has summoned GL Singhal, SP of the Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Tarun Barot, deputy superintendent of police (DySP) of Special Operation Group (SOG).

Karnail Singh, joint commissioner of Delhi police, is currently heading the SIT while two IPS officer- Satish Varma and Mohan Jha, are also part of the team.

''The two high profile officials have been called by the SIT with respect to the investigation of the case and they are likely to file reply next week. Barot has been summoned on Monday while Singhal has also to appear before the team,'' claimed sources close to the development.

Singhal, then assistant commissioner of police (ACP) and Barot, then police inspector, were part of the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) team which gunned down Pune girl student Ishrat Jahan, her friend Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjad Ali alias Rajkumar Akbar Ali Rana and Jisan Johar near Kotarpur Water Works on June 15, 2004.

The DCB, at that time, had claimed that the four had entered Gujarat in a bid to eliminate chief minister Narendra Modi and were killed in an exchange of gun firing with the DCB team.

Ishrat's mother and Javed's father had moved petition before the Gujarat high court smelling rat in the encounter and sought transfer of the probe into the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

However, the high court had formed the three member SIT.
The case took controversial turn last year when Metropolitan Magistrate SP Tamang concluded in its judicial inquiry that the encounter was staged and the four were murdered by cops to earn name, fame and promotion. Singhal then challenged the Tamang report and sought stay on its implementation.
