JMM chief Shibu Soren’s decision to go against the BJP has lead to fresh speculation about the changing political equations in the state.

While the Congress avoided talking about the matter, its members did not rule out a fresh combination. But the stumbling block to forming a new coalition is the irreconcilable rivalry between Jharkhand Vikas Morcha Prajatantrik (JVMP) founder Babulal Marandi (with whom the Congress is allied) and Soren.
Given the fear that no alliance might get a majority, party leaders are not ruling out the possibility of President’s rule. The state had been under President’s rule for a year before elections were held in December.

Congress sources say Marndi with 11 legislators holds the key to forming the government but he’s averse to working as Soren’s deputy.

The option with the Congress now appears to lie in convincing Soren, an MP from Dumka, to accept a Cabinet berth at the Centre and make his son, Hemant, the deputy chief minister alongside Marandi under a government headed by a Congress CM. Soren, say sources, isn’t willing to accept this arrangement.

But the number game in the 82-member assembly is such that the Congress, with just 14 legislators, will have to get JMM, with 18 MLAs, and the JVMP, to form a government.
