The Bharatiya Janta Party, the ruling party in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), has taken yet another decision that is a reminder of the upcoming civic body elections.

AMC's standing committee has passed a proposal, giving away around 1101 plots leased out to the Maldhari community, in four settlements in east Ahmedabad.

The committee unanimously decided to give away the land for peanuts.

The standing committee decided that residents of Rabari Vasahat in Odhav, Amraiwadi, old Jasodanagar and new Jasodanagar will be given plots at the rate of Rs2,000 per square metre, while they will have to pay Rs8,000 per square metre on the construction done by them.

After the general board of the AMC approves the decision, the civic body will forward the proposal to the state government for the final nod.

Different settlements are in place for plots of various sizes. The residents will have to pay rent with incremental interest from the date of resolution to lease out the plots to them, within six months. Besides, they will have to clear all dues on the land, be it property tax or other government charges.

The documentation charges will be borne by the residents and they will need to remove encroachments on public roads and common plots.

The decision has been taken after a four-month massive exercise of survey of settlements, residents, roads and open plots, said Asit Vora, chairman of AMC's standing committee. He said that they did not change any conditions stipulated in the old resolution that was passed long back. He also said that the residents will have to pay around Rs1lakh per plot.

The issue has been pending for a long time but the ruling party has taken the decision to take backward class voters into their fold, given that the civic body elections are just round the corner, said sources.

It is also believed that the decision has not gone down well with the Patel leaders in the BJP because of the recent clash between the Patel and Rabari communities in Ghatlodia and Bapunagar.
