In what can be construed as a major loss for the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), it has been reliably learnt that Prof G Raghuram has decided to join Indian Maritime University (IMU), Chennai as vice-chancellor (V-C). Prof Raghuram is a senior professor associated with IIMA for about 20 years and is part of the public systems group at the institute.

Sources confide he will proceed on leave to join IMU in July-end. It is believed that he has decided to move to IMU as it is an institute which offers domain specialisation in an area he has been working for a long time now. He was heading the task force founded by the central government prior to establishing the university in 2008. He will be the second V-C of the institute.

Interestingly, he was amongst the front runners for the coveted position of the director at IIMA this time. But his move at this crucial juncture when the newly-formed search and selection committee is searching for candidates to replace Prof Samir Barua has come as a big surprise to faculty members. Sources claim Raghuram was amongst the short-listed candidates whose names were sent to the ministry of human resource development for the post of director in 2007 as well.

Prof Raghuram specialises in infrastructure and transportation systems, supply chain and logistics management. He had shot to fame in 2006 after he wrote a paper on the turnaround of Indian Railways under the then Railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Following this, a Railway chair was established at the institute for research on the subject. Former rail minister Dinesh Trivedi had also sought Raghuram’s help before preparing the budget.

IMU is believed to be a prestigious central university with seven institutes in the country for Maritime training and specialisation affiliated with it. Along with a host of academic institutes world over, Raghuram sits on the board of Alcock Ashdown Gujarat and Adani Ports and SEZ.

Raghuram’s departure is expected to hit the institute as he joins a league of senior professors who have quit the institute in recent times to join as heads of other institutes.

Prof Pankaj Chandra joined as director of IIM Bangalore in 2007, Prof Ravichandran as director IIM Indore and Prof Dileep Mavalankar joined Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar as Dean academics while former director, Prof Bakul Dholakia joined Adani Institute of Infrastructure Management as director after his term got over in 2007.
