"What do you want, sir! We have M-class, Rouble, Gold, Silver, India and 99," a conspiratorial voice asks this 'undercover' reporter who is pretending to be a customer.
"What do you mean? Can you please explain at length," the flummoxed reporter says, trying to sound convincing as a prospective client.
After some hesitation, the man answered: "M-class merchandise means high profile girls, including models and college girls. 'Currency' means goris (white women) from foreign countries such as 'Rouble' from Russia. 'Silver' is for actresses who have worked in C-grade movies, and '99' stands for the middle class girls while 'India' is for bar dancers. But 'Gold' is the best you can get from me," the pimp rattled off.
It is difficult to believe that pimping and soliciting go on even in Ahmedabad which is otherwise a conservative city.
But with the New Year and other festivities round the corner, prostitutes and pimps are plying their clandestine trade in many of the city's hotels, farmhouses and even residential areas of the city. If anything, the flesh trade in the city seems to have become more organized this year.
Pimps active in the city say there is a whole range of 'packages' on offer this year. The packages vary in terms of 'facilities' such as rooms with or without air-conditioner, and foolproof protection from police raids, among others.
The prices too vary depending on what kind of 'merchandise and package' you are looking for.
For instance, for 'M-Class merchandise', a customer will have to pay between Rs3 lakh and Rs4 lakh for five days. For 'Currency', the price varies from Rs40,000 to Rs50,000 a day and so on.
According to sources, pimps are reported to have brought women to the city on contracts for five days to 15 days. Such contracts include paying for all their expenses such as air tickets, food and lodging, among others. It's to be noted that a couple of months back, the police had busted a prostitution racket which was being run with women brought from Mumbai on similar contracts.
