In a bonanza, the salaries and the allowances of all Haryana ministers and the leader of the opposition were doubled on Tuesday while allowances of MLAs substantially increased.

The salaries of the assembly speaker and the deputy speaker were also doubled while the allowances of all the 90 MLAs increased substantially. The hike would entail an extra expenditure of Rs2.19crore.

The salary of the chief minister, ministers, ministers of state and deputy ministers has been doubled to Rs40,000 a month.The speaker and the deputy speaker and the leader of the opposition would also get double their existing salary of Rs20,000 per month.

Three bills envisaging the hikes were moved by the parliamentary affairs minister Randeep Surjewala and were passed by voice vote by the state assembly. The salary and allowances were last hiked more than two years ago.

The constituency allowance of all the 90 MLAs has been hiked by 33%per from Rs15,000 to Rs20,000a month. The sumptuary allowance has been increased by 66% from Rs3,000 to Rs5,000 a month and the secretarial allowance has been doubled to Rs10,000 a month.
