Heavy rains lash Delhi; waterlogging causes traffic snarls

Heavy rains lashed the national capital this evening resulting in traffic chaos on waterlogged roads in several parts of the city.

The rain gauges measured 21 mm during the day till 5.30pm while for a period of 24 hours ending 8.30am, the city received 26.8 mm.

Traffic was affected at Raja Garden towards Punjabi Bagh, Panchsheel Marg, Dhaula Kuan, Savitri flyover, Lakshmi Nagar, Badarpur, Moolchand, Captain Gaur Marg, Kalkaji and Connaught Place due to waterlogging.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 32.5 degree Celsius and minimum at 25.5 degrees. The humidity was recorded between 75 and at 97%.

The city has received 888 mm of rains since July 5 when monsoon hit the capital which is 283 mm more than usual.

This month alone the city received 188 mm rains against around 90 mm usual rain for this month.

According to a statement from the meteorological department, August also witnessed above normal rainfall.

"Rainfall was experienced on 22 days with total rainfall of 455.1 mm against normal of 225.8 mm with 11 rainy days. Three heavy spells on 01, 15 and 20 August with 62.7, 62.0 and 110.0 mm rain respectively contributed nearly 50% of the total monthly rainfall," the statement said.
