Blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, acidity are some of the ailments worrying the women prisoners of Sabarmati Central jail.

This was revealed during a one-day health camp organised for the women prisoners by the ladies club of Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA), a branch of the Indian Medical Association.
Around 17 lady doctors took part in the camp and examined some 67 women prisoners.  The jail houses some 80 women prisoners.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Nirmala Vajvani, president of AMA ladies club, said that the camp was an effort to help the women prisoners. "We may not be able to take them out of the jail to treat their ailments but we will extend all possible support in case they are in need of some treatment," she said.

During the camp it was found that 18 of the prisoners suffered from high blood pressure and were at risk of heart disease. 10 were diabetic of which two didn't even know that they had the condition. One prisoner was suffering from depression while six had viral fever.

A rangoli competition was also organised for the women prisoners, who enthusiastically participated in it. The first prize was won by Aarti Jadeja, who is accused of escaping from a petrol pump with 60 litres of petrol without paying for it.

The second prize went to Prabha Raval, 65, who came to the jail 25 days ago. She had drawn a trishul (trident) and the picture of Goddess Amba. Speaking about her victory she said, "It was a nice feeling. Such competitions help us forget the loneliness that is part of being in jail."

Megha Shah, an IT engineer who is jail in connection with the murder of her lover, said that the jail often organises programmes to help develop the skills of women prisoners. "This can be useful in rehabilitating the women once they get out of jail," she said.

Jail superintendent RJ Parghi said the jail also organises beauty parlour courses, computer classes and stitching classes. "This will help the women earn their livelihood once they are out of jail. The aim is also to bring about a transformation in the prisoners," he added.
