The police are on the trail of the smart and savvy Audi thief who walked into a showroom and drove away with the vehicle. The man had taken the car for a test drive and fooled the sales executive accompanying him to get down. He then escaped with the car.
As part of the probe the police have made a sketch of the thief. The police believe that more than one person could be involved in the theft. The thief is likely to be a member of a gang based either in Mumbai or Delhi, police sources said.
Though they have begun investigations, police are still clueless about the car and the thief. Managing director, Audi Ahmedabad, Sameer Mistry told DNA that all formalities for the test drive was done by the executive. Mistry said that information given by the thief also turned out to be false.
Talking to DNA, the investigating officer and police inspector, SB Trivedi, Vastrapur police station said that apart from the sketch they have also informed other states and police stations of the theft. Trivedi further said that the modus operandi is similar to the ones used by gangs in Mumbai and Delhi.
"More than one person should be involved in this. Such gangs operate with in-depth planning and often conduct a detailed recce of their targets," he said.
Police also believe that the thief must have done a recce of the test-drive route as well. "He may have taken the Sardar Patel Ring Road and even escaped to Rajasthan," Trivedi said.
The police had earlier got a tip-off that the stolen car was seen near Himmatnagar few hours after the theft. Sources said that police are also looking at the CCTV footage of all toll roads surrounding Ahmedabad.
The car was stolen on Friday, when a man identifying himself as Bhavesh Kabra approached the Audi showroom and asked for a test drive of their vehicle. The man later escaped with the car from near Bhadaj on Science City Road.

Sameer Mistry, Managing Director, Audi Ahmedabad, told DNA that all the formalities required to be conducted before a test drive were done by his staff. However, the person escaped with the car even before the sales executive understands anything. The thief had identified him as Bhavesh Kabra and had mentioned the address of Shreenath Society in Shahibaugh. However, the police reached there only to find that the address was false.
