The Gujarat government is likely to relax the prohibition on liquor in the state with the aim of boosting beach tourism. "Liquor is an integral part of beach tourism, so the government may consider this fact and relax the ban conditionally. Chief minister Narendra Modi and the cabinet will decide on the issue," a highly placed source in the state government said.
For the development of beach and coastal tourism, the Gujarat government has started preparing a 'beach tourism master plan', providing a clear roadmap for the development of the sector. The issues hindering tourism development will be identified and addressed, the source said. The government has appointed a high-level committee headed by a prominent Vadodara-based educationist to develop tourism strategy.
Meanwhile, 14 beaches and many coastal sites have been identified for development, and these will be promoted as beach tourism sites in Gujarat.
