‘Alvida 2010, Welcome Bey Hajaar Agiyaar’ — this half-English-half-Gujarati sentence of chief minister Narendra Modi marked the end of the week-long fiesta, the Kankaria Carnival, on Friday evening.

Addressing a mammoth crowd of almost 3 lakh people on the last day of the carnival, the CM said that this annual event has pushed the historic place into prominence once again.

"Kankaria — once a prime landmark had gradually lost its quintessential charm and identity. However, with such festivals, it is literally basking in the limelight anew,” quipped Modi.

He dedicated the carnival to the development of the poor and under privileged kids of the city. "Our aim is to empower these kids, whose potential shouldn't be affected by their poverty," Modi said.

Modi also formally inaugurated the 'Kids City', a fun zone for kids located opposite the Nagina vadi. He took first hand information about the facilities and arrangements in the zone and was visibly impressed by the quality and scale of work done inside it.

He claimed it to be the one-of-its-kind in the entire country. The CM also praised a newspaper brought out by kids using the infrastructure of City.

Thanking Amdavadis and the civic body for turning this year's carnival into a huge success, Modi also felicitated people from various walks of life who had contributed significantly in the carnival.

Musical performances by various singers and orchestra had set the mood for the New Year celebration and concluding session of the carnival. An array of fireworks and laser show mesmerised people at 10 pm.

Mayor Asit Vora said that the week-long carnival saw almost 25 lakh visitors. State revenue minister Anandiben Patel was also present on the occasion.
