Even though the Gujarat police have started the use of Global Positioning System (GPS)-enabled vehicles on a pilot basis, it is facing problems in connecting the system with digital maps, which could help serve the purpose of these vehicles.

The pilot project of GPS-enabled vehicles had been implemented in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surendranagar and Rajkot districts and its ambit was to be expanded slowly.

A senior cop familiar with the development told DNA, “The department is facing problems due to lack of digital maps, which hinders early implementation of the GPS project in the state.”

“The department is not getting the desired results from GPS-enabled vehicles as the digital maps to be used to trace the vehicles has not yet been prepared,” a source said.
The Survey of India has to prepare the digital map for it. However, director, Survey of India, digital mapping, Ram Prasad told DNA that the digital map for it has been prepared but the problem could lie with the connection of digital map and GPS-enabled vehicles.

A police source also said that the status of the GPS-enabled police vehicles is unclear and it would take more time to streamline the project. “It is in a very early phase, and the department is trying to work on its alternatives as well,” the official said. “It is too early to tell anything about the future of this technology in police vehicles,” the source said.

However, the director general of police, SS Khandwawala, told DNA that the department planned to speed up the project. “We will implement it in the vehicles of traffic department soon, and gradually all police patrolling vehicles will be converted into GPS-enabled vehicles,” he added.
