Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested four stone-throwers for allegedly killing an 11-day-old at Chakala in Baramulla district on February 22.

Irfan was killed when stone-throwers allegedly thrashed his mother, brother and grandfather after dragging them out of a bus. The residents of Dangiwacha-Rafiabad village were going to the district hospital for the ailing infant’s treatment.

Police said Irfan received internal injuries after he fell from his
mother’s lap in the scuffle with the stone-throwers and later died in hospital.

“Tanveer Ahmad Saleh, Bilal Ahmad Channa, Akhtar Hussain Bhat and Mohammed Ramzan Siraj have been arrested in connection with the murder of the baby. Tanveer had dragged the infant’s mother out of the vehicle,” Ali Mohammad Sagar, minister for law and parliamentary affairs, told the legislative assembly in Jammu.

Two vehicles used by the stone-pelters have also been seized. A case under section 302 RPC (murder) has been registered against the accused. Tanveer, police said, was a former militant leading the stone-pelters at Chakala.

“The stone-pelters had forcibly commandeered the two Sumo vehicles used in the incident,” a senior police officer said.
Sagar said 15 witnesses identified the accused before they were arrested. “All accused are from Baramulla. We appreciate the timely action by police,” he said. Sagar said everyone in Baramulla knew the background of the accused.

“We arrested them [the accused] two days ago. We are probing the conspiracy angle,” a police officer said.

The baby’s killing had roc-ked the assembly, with the ma-in opposition, the People’s Democratic Party, creating a ruc-kus in the House demanding a discussion on the incident.
