Folk traditions from across country dance as one

Garba is enjoyed at its best if you have a group to back you or accompany you. And hence turn around at any of the venues you go during the Navratri, and you will find most of the garba revellers coming in groups. And if you notice, you may discover that each of the groups have their unique style of clothes, pattern and rhythm of dance and something exclusive that makes them stand apart from the other groups.

Prahladnagar based Chix & Rex Dance Group has planned some exceptional for the nine nights of this year. “We have planned to incorporate the dance styles of all different folk dances of India, including Lavni, Rajasthani, Punjabi, Manipuri and Adivasi,” informs Rakesh Someshwar, the owner and choreographer of the Chix & Rex Dance Group. The group has researched a lot on the different folk dance forms prevailing in India and then decided to incorporate the above mentioned dance styles.

“Each of the Garba groups of Ahmedabad normally prefer to perform Sheri Garba, or use some of the Bollywood steps along with the regular Garba steps. We have worked a lot on our rhythm of Garba and are sure that none will be able to beat us at the venues we perform,” says Someshwar.

To look distinctive, the group has prepared a 12-foot Chhatri of eight sarees, pipes, matkis, an electric disco ball and an umbrella. It took three long days for the group to prepare the distinguishingly long Chhatri.  “Initially our entire group will dance along the side of the Chhatri and later on the girls will lift the sarees and dance using it as a prop. While the boys will use long Adivasi sticks as props,” says Someshwar, who along with the entire group has been rehearsing for months for Garba.
