After investigation over several days, the cyber crime cell of Ahmedabad city found an accused who had posted a fake profile of a family friend's daughter living in the same society. The victim refused to file an official complaint and the boy walked away free.

After an application by a girl who received obscene messages, the police investigated and found that the boy was her classmate. The girl's family later decided to not file any official complaint and the boy walked free.

These are some of the many cases that the cyber crime cell of the detection of crime branch is handling. However, out of the total cases investigated by the cell, very few manage to actually reach the stage of filing an official police complaint. The reason: a settlement between the families and withdrawal of the application.

So far, the cell has been investigating the cases mainly on the basis of an application filed by the complainant and the official FIR is later on filed once some part of the investigation is completed. DCB sleuths investigate the cases and later file an official complaint once they are on the right track of investigation.

However, once the accused is identified after the attempts of the cyber crime cell, majority of the complainants refuse to move forward and file the police complaint, and the police officials have no option than to allow the accused walk freely.

"Most of the investigations are conducted, only on the basis of the application and the investigation is started after it," police inspector, cyber crime cell, DCB, Kiran Patel told DNA. "In majority of the cases, the accused responsible for the crime is a close friend, known person or relative of the complainant and later on the complainant becomes reluctant to file the official complaint," he said.

A cop, who don't want to be named, said that it is not possible to keep on filing FIR for each and every complaint immediately it reaches us, especially in the cyber crimes. "We initially starts the investigation on the basis of the application and later on files the complaint after the initial investigations," the cop said.

The DCB, however, is helpless for this and cannot do anything, till there is official complaint. "Majority of the accused nabbed by us after the cyber crime investigation, mainly for obscene messages, fake profiles etc on the social network have walked freely," Patel added.
