Navratri is a time for white-collar professionals to indulge in the revelry of the season, away from their hectic work schedules. In fact, many of them are not only masters of the boardroom, but also ardent garba enthusiasts, winning prizes at garba events during the nine-night festival.

Nitin Gandhi, a 26-year-old lawyer part of the Asaram Bapu and Ishrat encounter proceedings, has been playing garba since his childhood. “But my actual journey with garba began when I entered college. I then decided that no matter what profession I choose, I will not let my hobby and talent go to waste,” he said. Gandhi said that it is hard to arrive at garba venues after a hectic day of work, but once he reaches, he forgets everything else and becomes a different person.

Many professionals wind up their work before time during Navratri, immediately leaving for home to prepare for the night’s revelry.

Saurin Shah, a faculty member at LJ College in Ahmedabad, makes sure that he does not miss a single night of garba during Navratri. “I begin my day at six in the morning and end at around midnight. However, as far as Navratri is concerned, my entire group makes sure that everything is decided from day one to the last day,” he said.

Regarding coordinating his activities and the disturbance to his daily routine, he said, “I know there will always be something or the other that will create a hurdle, but we are all very firm regarding our plans. Irrespective of what happens, we reach the garba grounds and win prizes too.”

Mona Nair, a 24-year-old senior HR executive at a private firm in Ahmedabad, does not let her work affect her passion for Navratri. “My work is such that I have to manage huge manpower. On top of this, my father is very strict in terms of discipline and night-outs. So, I ask my brother to accompany me,” she said.

Nair has won prizes at almost all clubs in Ahmedabad. “I complete my preparations for Navratri two to three weeks in advance. I do not like to take a chance with the possibility of anything going wrong and my performance being affected,” she said.
