Criminal gangs of eastern Ahmedabad are up in arms against each others these days. Turf war, business rivalry and clash of ambitions, among others, are some of the reasons various gangs of the area are attacking each other.

Areas such as Amraiwadi, Odhav and Ramol are the worst affected where almost every day a complaint of attempt to murder is being lodged. In addition, three people were killed in the last one month allegedly in the gang war.

They are Hafiz Shaikh, Raju Bhatt and Zakir Pathan, who was  found dead in Maninagar on Tuesday. Besides, Jignesh Thapa of Fracture gang was also shot. However, he was lucky enough to have survived but is still hospitalised.

According to police there are at least six big active gangs while over 20 small-time gangs also pop up occasionally. However, the deadliest gangs are Bhaiji, Ghetiya, Dadoo, Fracture, Ankit Barot and Ashok Bhill, among others. Besides, gangs run by Gova Rabari, Babu Bhaiya, Kailash Gangu, Vishnu Marwadi and Jagan Madrasi are said to have turned their business mainly into real estate. Police say that in eastern part of the city if anyone wants to sort out a dispute related to real estate these gangs are the ones approached and not the police.

Insiders say that over the years business rivalry has crept in among the gangs. Since the old ones have turned away from bootlegging and extortion business, the new gangs have come into the fore. This has led to internal fights among the gangs in which blood is being shed.

The gruesome murder of Hafiz Shaikh is also said to be an outcome of business rivalry in bootlegging. Sources said that erstwhile gangster Jagan Madrasi is now fighting with his own ‘man’ Gautam Kavandar who himself wants to become a don. Madrasi has, in fact, lodged an application against Kavandar for issuing threats.

In the case of Vishnu Marwari and Meblo, believed to be a member of Fracture gang, also business rivalry is the cause for friction. Sources say that the reason is a land dispute which both of them want to solve in their own fashion.

Jignesh Thapa, a member of Fracture gang was shot at in Odhav sometime back allegedly by Rahul Circuit who left the gang. The reason is said to be a land dispute. Circuit and his family are said to have been attacked by Thapa and company because of which Circuit wanted to teach Thapa a lesson.
