The Delhi government today directed all medical establishments in the city to dispose off radioactive material strictly as per rules and regulations framed by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.

Health minister Kiran Walia said all medical establishments will have to dispose off radioactive materials as per provision of Atomic Energy (Safe Disposal of Radioactive Wastes) Rules 1987 and Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules 2004.

She said the directive has been issued to heads of all hospitals, diagnostic centres, medical laboratories after a radioactive material sold as scrap by Delhi University led to the death of a labourer and hospitalisation of ten others.

Terming the incident of radioactive exposure at the Mayapuri scrap market as a "very serious" issue, she said all hospitals and health centres who uses radioactive material for various reasons will have to follow the stringent procedures in disposing them off.

Walia asked all concerned to strictly adhere to the relevant sections of the Atomic Energy Act, Atomic Energy (Safe Disposal of Radio Active Wastes) Rules, 1987 and Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules, 2004.

These rules have detailed guidelines to deal with radioactive wastes as well as to ensure their safe disposal.

She said the rules provides for adequate surveillance of likely leakages, emergency preparedness, adopting adequate safety norms while decommissioning radioactive materials.

The recent detection of radiation exposure has brought to focus the urgent need to safely deal with radiological and radiotherapy equipments and isotopes used in nuclear medicines.

Walia asked all the heads of hospitals, medical centres, diagnostic centres, medical labs using radioactive materials to keep a record of them so that routine inspections by the competent authority could be carried out if and when needed.

She said any non-compliance of rules would invite strict action.
