Under attack for capital's tardy preparation for the Commonwealth Games, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit today instructed MCD, NDMC and other government departments to improve their coordination with each other so that city could successfully host the event.

Dikshit also exhorted MCD, NDMC and Delhi Cantonment Board to present a clean and green look of their localities during the event.

She further called upon these agencies to refurbish, up-grade and strengthen roads with proper street lighting and street-scaping.

The MCD apprised that they would carry out cleanliness of the roads three times a day during the Games.

It was also informed that day to day collection of garbage in two MCD zones has been started which would be extended in remaining zones gradually.

It was decided in the meeting that chief secretary Rakesh Mehta would review preparedness of local bodies on a regular basis whereas the chief minister would review their performance once in a month.

The chief minister also gave instructions for strict implementation of defacement of Property Act which is enforceable by the local bodies.

The local bodies were told to deploy their staff to effectively control defacement.

The meeting was attended by three of Dikshit's ministerial colleagues, Delhi Mayor, MCD Commissioner, MCD Chairperson and other senior officials of the Delhi Government.

Earlier in the week, Dikshit had told her ministerial colleagues to regularly inspect various project sites and do the needful to ensure that all the projects are completed well ahead of the deadline.

Last week, president of Commonwealth Games Federation Michael Fennell had criticised the tardy preparation for the prestigious sporting event and had asked Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi to fix a meeting with prime minister Manmohan Singh.

Fennell was miffed at the pace of the preparation for the October 3-14 multi-disciplinary event and shot off an angry letter, saying the Games was heading for "partial failure" unless the organisers pulled up their socks.
