Differences continued to dog the political parties in Bihar over naming the newly-constructed Kosi bridge, a new lifeline to the Mithilanchal region.

State Youth Congress president Lalan Kumar and former MP Ranjit Ranjan today said they would petition Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Surface Transport Minister CP Joshi to name the bridge after veteran socialist leader BP Mandal, giving recognition to the works done by him in the area.

On the other hand, BJP leader Vinodanand Jha has demanded that the bridge be named after former Union Railway Minister Lalit Narayan Mishra. Former Bihar Chief Minister and senior JD(U) leader Jagannath Mishra has also voiced similar demand.

State Congress president Choudhary Mehboob Ali Kaiser demanded that the bridge be named after Lali Narayan Mishra because of his contribution in the Kosi and Mithilanchan regions.

However, Kumar and Ranjan said any move to name the bridge after LN Mishra would be opposed by the state youth Congress and its activists.

The two leaders said they have constituted an 11-member delegation, comprising party leaders Bibha Kumari, Md Kamran, Suresh Chandra Pappu and Rohit Kumar, and would submit separate memoranda to the Prime Minister and the Union Surface Transport Minister for naming the bridge after the socialist leader.

Kumar said he would also call on Governor Devanand Konwar requesting him to direct the Nitish Kumar government to name the bridge after Mandal, a legendary personality of the Kosi belt.

A new chapter was added to the development of Mithilanchal when Joshi and the Chief Minister dedicated the much-awaited four lane bridge across Kosi to the people on Wednesday.

The four lane 1.87km-long mega bridge over the main stream of Kosi river on NH57 has been constructed at an estimated expenditure of Rs431 crore at Nirmali and will connect Mithilanchal and Kosi belt after 78 years.
