Decision to carve Telangana sparks protests in Andhra Pradesh

The Centre's decision to initiate the process for formation of separate Telangana from Andhra Pradesh sparked widespread protests in Rayalaseema and the state's coastal regions with agitators staging road blockades and damaging buses.

Favouring a united Andhra Pradesh, students and protesters took to streets in the coastal districts of Visakhapatnam, Guntur, Krishna and Anantapur and Chittoor districts in the Rayalaseema region.

Hundreds of students from Srikrishna Devaraya University at Anantapur in Rayalaseema region resorted to flash protests, blocking roads and damaging windshields of four APSRTC buses on outskirts of the city, Anantapur DSP Murugesh Kumar Singh said.

However, no arrests have been made so far, he said.

In Visakhapatnam, students organised a series of protests in support of their demand for 'Samaikya Andhra Pradesh' (united Andhra Pradesh) and burnt effigies at the Andhra University (AU) campus, city commissioner of police N Samba Siva Rao, told PTI.

Some of them even climbed on top of the building raising 'united Andhra Pradesh' slogans, he said. The commissioner said the  protests have been peaceful so far though heavy deployment of force has been made around the campus to avert any untoward incident.

Demanding that the Centre reverse its decision, students of AU decided to undertake relay hunger fasts.

In Vijayawada, Congress leaders have begun relay hunger strikes and called for a bandh in the city tomorrow.

Telugu Desam activists in the coastal city performed a 'Palabhishekam' (milk abhishekam) on the statue of late NT Rama Rao, who championed Telugu pride, to register their protest.

Students of Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur locked the varsity entrance gate and staged a road blockade, formed a human chain and extended support to the legislators who have resigned from their posts.

In East Godavari district, the agitators held a 'rail roko' at Anaparty town.
