The civic body finally began a demolition drive against illegal constructions in Saudagar ni Pol and surrounding areas of Relief road.
So far four illegal structures have been targeted by the AMC, which include Cosmos Bank at Relief road, one building at Navi Mohlat Pol, Pinki Palace at Dhalgarwad, and a building at Street no. 3 of Saudagar ni Pol.
On Friday, following the building collapse, mayor Asit Vora had promised action against such structures.
Soon the AMC swung into action and first targeted a five-storied building on street No-9 of Navi Mohalt Pol, located near the Saudagar Ni Pol.
Residents alleged that earlier the AMC had served notices to the builder but he continued with the construction.
"This building on plot No 2115 was constructed without any permission," said Mohammad Shoaib, who lives near the building.
He fears that the shoddy construction will one day bring down the building.
Shoaib said that the building is actually a seven-storeye but seems like a five-storeyed one on the outside.
"You can't build such buildings without the support of corrupt officials" said Shoaib. The residents allege a nexus between builders and AMC officials.
According to them, top officials like IK Patel, Dy Commissioner of Central Zone and Navin Patel, Dy Estate and TDO of Central zone, were informed about this structure several times, but they just gave false assurances.
"We have given written complaint to IK Patel and Navin Patel but every time they just gave us empty promises," said Maqsood Jafar Hussain, resident of house No 2116, which was severely damaged due to the illegal construction. Banoben, aunt of Mohammad Shoaib showed all the applications that they had given to the AMC regarding the
illegal construction.
