Despite curfew, militants attacked security forces at three places in Sopore through Thursday night, injuring three police personnel.

Police said the first attack occurred at 12.30 am.

Militants lobbed four grenades and opened indiscriminate fire at a convoy of police and CRPF vehicles at Chankhan in which a CRPF constable was injured.

Ninety minutes later, militants struck again firing UBGL grenades at the State Bank of India building in Sopore, causing injuries to an Indian Reserve Police constable. Half-an-hour later, they attacked a police vehicle near Muslim Peer, injuring its driver.

“There were three attacks by militants last [Thursday] night in Sopore,” inspector general of police (IGP) Farooq Ahmad said.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted between police and protestors near the Hazratbal shrine after Friday prayers.

Some protestors were raising pro-freedom slogans after the prayers when they were caned by police, leading to the clash.
Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), however, accused police and other security agencies of “desecrating” the shrine.

“The desecration of the shrine exposes the government which has crossed all limits,” Bashir Ahmad Bhat, vice-chairman of JKLF, said.

IGP Ahmad said more than 3,000 people offered Friday prayers at the shrine. “Everything was peaceful,” he said.

Media gag eased
Local newspapers could not hit the stands in Kashmir for the second day on Friday due to restrictions imposed by the authorities. Facing severe criticism, the Jammu and Kashmir government relaxed the media gag, but issued curfew passes only to accredited journalists and editors.

Adding to the woes of the people, the Jammu-based Oil Tanker Owners Association suspended fuel supply to the Valley. “Our three drivers were beaten up in Sumbal. Unless security is provided, we will not load fuel for the Valley,” Anand Sharma, president of the association, said.
