In view of the unending violence in the valley, the Centre is planning to deploy more CRPF troops to deal with the situation. The violence has, so far, claimed 62 lives.

Around 48 companies of CRPF on Amarnath Yatra security duty will return to their base camps in J&K after August 24 to join the forces. These companies were deployed on Amarnath Yatra security duty since June 1.

The forces will return to their battalions and augment the forces, which have been stretched thin in the last two months of agitation, after the Amarnath Yatra ends on August 24. Around 1,003 police and security personnel have been injured in street clashes between June 1 and July 22.

“No additional force was brought from outside for yatra duty. Except a women company, all the companies deployed for yatra security were mobilised from the existing manpower in J&K. So these companies will have to return to their base camps,” CRPF spokesman Prabhakar Tripathi said.
This is in addition to the 21 companies of CRPF and three RAF companies deployed early this month in a last ditch effort to bring the situation in J&K under control.

CRPF companies are attached with J&K Police’s special operation group for counter insurgency duties. But most of the CRPF men are deployed to perform law and order duties in the state. CRPF replaced the BSF in 2005 after a group of ministers’ recommended a specified role for every security agency. Since then, the force has been performing internal security duties in trouble-torn Kashmir.

Most of the CRPF companies are deployed in cities and towns in Kashmir. After the unrest spread to rural areas, a need was felt to deploy CPRF to quell the protests. Since there were no forces available then, additional companies were brought from peaceful areas to assist the police, sources said.
