The BJP today accused the Congress of pursuing anti-Schedule Caste (SC) policies in the country. It claimed that the grand-old party never took measures for the upliftment of the community.

"The successive governments of Congress at the Centre were anti-SCs," National vice president of SC Morcha of BJP, Ramesh Chander Rattan, told reporters here today. While dozens of Indians were conferred with Bharat Ratna by the Congress, it never deemed it fit to honour with this prestigious award to Dr BR Ambedkar, the tallest leader of the Dalits, he said.

"It was only the BJP-supported government at the Centre in 1989 when Dr Ambedkar (posthumously) was honoured with Bharat Ratna," said Rattan, who is on a 2-day visit to J&K, adding that it was during BJP-led NDA's rule that his portrait was installed in the Parliament.

Referring to the Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP leader said that present Congress-National Conference coalition government's move to ban inter-district recruitment for SCs is nothing but harm their interests and the BJP opposes it.

He said that the previous Congress-led coalition in Jammu and Kashmir had brought down the reservation in promotions for SCs to four per cent from eight per cent, thus denying the members of this community of their right granted to them under constitution.
