Former Punjab chief minister and senior congress leader Captain Amarinder Singh has demanded an industrial package for Punjab.

The demand comes in the wake of the Union commerce ministry recommending the extension of industrial package to Himachal Pradesh for the next three years.

Stating that he was not against the financial assistance to the neighbouring state, Singh asked the Centre to consider similar demands of Punjab.

"The exodus of business houses from Punjab to the neighbouring states, that enjoy the industrial incentives, can be stopped if such a package is also alloted to Punjab," the former chief minister told reporters here.

"A stretch of 30 km in the state form part of the international border. All industries in this area along the international border deserve this special package," he said.

Singh noted that Punjab was passing through a grim economic situation and cautioned that the situation would "further deteriorate because of the roll back in power tariff and the absence of any clear cut policy of the Akali-BJP government".
