After three years of probe, CBI has filed a chargesheet against former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala for allegedly possessing assets worth Rs6 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income between 1993 and 2006.

The chargesheet against Chautala, an MLA, was filed in Karkardooma court on March 26 after CBI received sanction from speaker of Haryana Assembly, an agency spokesperson said here today.

75-year-old Chautala is a five-time chief minister and last held the post between July 1999 to March 2005. He currently represents Uchana Kalan constituency of Hissar district in Haryana Assembly.

The spokesperson alleged that the accused was found in possession of assets to the tune of Rs6.09 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income. It is roughly 189% of his income of Rs3.22 crore during the period.

CBI claimed that Chautala had been found in possession of immovable and movable assets worth Rs7.43 crore in addition to the expenditure incurred by him for Rs1.91 croreduring the period.

CBI had registered a case in a designated court here in April 2006 and searched 24 premises of the Chautalas in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Chandigarh during which it had sezied Rs13 lakh and froze five bank accounts containing Rs1.34 crore belonging to Chautala and his family members.

The spokesperson said the figures are conservative estimates as these are based on registered values or valuation reports to calculate the acquisition cost.

Among the properties mentioned in the chargesheet by the CBI were six plots in Haryana and Delhi, a farm house, a penthouse, Rs80 lakh cash and other assets worth Rs2.5 crore.

On December 24 last, the CBI had filed chargesheets in the designated court against Ajay and Abhay Chautala for allegedly having assets more than their known sources of income.

According to the chargesheet against Ajay, CBI claimed he was in possession of assets to the tune of Rs27.74 crore, 339% more than his income of Rs8.17 crore during the period of 1993 to 2006.

The second chargesheet was filed against Abhay alleging his assets were 522% more than his income of Rs22.89 crore as per Income Tax records during the check period of 2000 to 2005. The agency claimed to have found Rs119.69 crore worth of assets.

CBI stumbled upon the details of assets belonging to Chautalas during the searches it carried out on April seven, 2005, as part of a probe into alleged malpractices in recruitment of school teachers in Haryana, a case handed over to the agency by the Supreme Court.
