Sohail Hindustani, arrested for his alleged role in the cash-for-vote scam, today claimed before a court here that Delhi police was trying to save the Congress party and the government.

He alleged that crime branch of the Delhi police want to change the course of investigation by falsely terming him as "master orchestra" of the conspiracy.

"They (police) want to have a disclosure statement from my client and change the course of investigation. The ultimate cause of the action (cash-for-vote scam) was to save the government which was not in majority at that time (July 22, 2008)," his counsel Anand contended before Special Judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal.

He opposed the plea by the police seeking two-days custodial interrogation of Hindustani and said that they are giving clean-chit to the Congress despite the fact that investigation is still going on.

"They (police) were sleeping for the last two-and-half years. What they want from him (Hindustani) now?....They are giving clean chit to the Congress party. How can you give clean-chit at this stage of probe?" he said.
