The BJP today said it is in the process of chalking out a strategy to launch an agitation across the country on the lines of the pre-Emergency movement led by Jai Prakash Narain against government "apathy" towards corruption, inflation and Indian black money abroad.

"The issues of corruption, rising inflation and Indian black money abroad are dominant issues in Indian politics today. BJP senior leaders, office-bearers and chief ministers will attend a meeting at Kolkata tomorrow to discuss the strategy for taking these issues to the people," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

Asked if Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa- who is facing charges of favouring his sons in out-of-turn land allotments- will also attend the meeting tomorrow, Javadekar replied in the affirmative.

Javadekar maintained that the principal opposition plans to start an agitation against these three issues on the lines of the movements in 1974 (against the Indira Gandhi regime) and 1987 (against the Rajiv Gandhi government on Bofors scam).

He said a programme committee to be headed by senior party leader and general secretary Ananth Kumar is also being formed to oversee the agitation.

The office-bearers' meeting will also discuss the principal opposition's plans for the forthcoming budget session of Parliament that starts on February 21.

BJP had recently held NDA rallies in some major cities against corruption in the UPA government but these arguably had a limited appeal. The party seems to have decided to go it alone this time.

Javadekar appeared evasive on this issue, stating the "banner" under which the agitation is held is not important.

"There was tremendous unity among the opposition parties in Parliament and outside on the streets on these issues," he said.

The BJP asked the government why it had not arrested Hasan Ali, accused of tax evasion running into crores and stashing black money abroad, though the case against him is pending for the last three years.

The office-bearers' meeting in Kolkata tomorrow will be followed by a huge rally which will be addressed by the BJP top brass including L K Advani, Nitin Gadkari, Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj, among others.

The rally is a culmination of the yatra taken out by the West Bengal BJP unit from Cooch Behar against the CPI(M) government.

BJP will launch its election campaign in the state with this rally which will target both the CPI(M)-led government and the Congress-TMC alliance.
