With Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation election nearing, the BJP-ruled civic body has lined up 10 Garib Kalyan Melas in the city next month to woo voters belonging to socially and economically b ackward classes.
With Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) election nearing, the BJP-ruled civic body has lined up 10 Garib Kalyan Melas in the city next month to woo voters belonging to socially and economically backward classes. It is believed that after securing upper class vote bank by having launched swanky projects in the city, the BJP aims at wooing the committed Congress voters by organising such programmes.
The BJP which is believed to have a good command over upper class Hindus is now turning to poor and backward class people living in slums.
"The beneficiaries are not concerned whether they are benefited by central or state government schemes. They just need help," said sources in BJP. They said the schemes will give the BJP an edge over the Congress in the upcoming elections.
The Garib Kalyan Melas will be organised in assembly seat areas. The exact places and dates will be finalised by the political wing, but the administration has started working in that direction.
"We are working on the proposals we have received so far. However, we still have around 10 days to add more beneficiaries," said an AMC official. Those who come under below poverty line (BPL) but have not benefited under any scheme will be a target area, said the official.
Earlier, the municipal corporation had organised two Garib Kalyan Melas — one at Bapunagar and another at Rakhial. Now, it will be organised in places like Naranpura, Danilimda, Kalupur, Maninagar, Naroda and other assembly seat areas.
In Garib Kalyan Mela, people are provided with facilities available under around 48 schemes of central and state governments, along with bankable schemes. It is expected that around 2,500 to 3,000 underpriviledged people will benefit in one such mela.
