Congress today dismissed as "highly irresponsible" the BJP demand for the sacking of Home Minister P Chidambaram on the eve of the Supreme Court decision on the issue of CBI probe into his alleged role in the 2G scam.

"BJP has the very irresponsible habit of putting the cart before the horse. If at all, the Supreme Court is delivering its judgment in a particular case, it would be proper to wait for the order before jumping the gun," party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters in Delhi.

Tewari's reaction came close on the heels of senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to sack the home minister for his alleged involvement in the 2G case.

"This should be his (PM's) first step. Any delay will only lower his own credibility," Joshi, who is the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee which is going into the 2G issue, told reporters at the BJP headquarters.

BJP wanted the prime minister to immediately take appropriate action and punish the guilty else the needle of suspicion in the case would point towards him as well. The BJP insisted that action should be taken against officials involved in the matter, be they from the PMO, Law Ministry or the Solicitor General's office.

At the AICC briefing, Tewari also dismissed suggestions that the prime minister could not be delinked from the Prime Minister's Office which has come under criticism by the apex court in the case.

Noting that the order of the court needed to be looked at holistically, he said that the court has very clearly stated that the prime minister has no role.
