If you are considering Diwali as an opportunity to go out on a shopping spree and have cash or jewellery on you most of the time, beware of the bikers' gangs, who are out to spoil your festive mood by robbing you of your valuables, even in broad daylight. For them, it seems Diwali is the best time to do business given the fact that most people out for a Diwali purchase carry cash with them.

If a source in the police department, who has worked on cases of theft, is to be believed, the bikers' gang becomes very active during the festive season. The source said that almost half of such gangs active in the state come from outside Gujarat.

The police source said that interstate gangs operate in the city throughout the year, but during the festive season the number of such gangs increases. The recent theft of Rs10 lakh reported from Vastrapur is also believed to have been orchestrated by one such outside gang.

"Usually during the festive seasons, the movement of people with cash and jewellery increases, and it is not surprising that such gangs are lured to a state like Gujarat, where people spend lot of money during the festive seasons and particularly during Diwali," a police inspector told DNA.

"Gangs coming from outside stay in the city for a very brief period; they usually move out once they commit a theft," the PI said.

"People shop a lot during Diwali, and a lot of cash is transacted from one place to the other. This serves as just the opportunity for the bikers' gangs to strike," another source in the police said.

Joint commissioner of police, Sector 1, Mohan Jha told DNA that from Wednesday onwards patrolling in the city will be strengthened and the police bikes will be increased to almost 30 per cent. "We will deploy around 300 more home guards in the western part of the city as well as in crowded areas like Kalupur and Shahpur," Jha said.

"Inspection of vehicles will also be intensified and a close tab will be kept on city hotels to trace interstate gangs," he said.
