Illegal street racing in the city led to a fight among some collegians which left one youth severely injured on Thursday.

Yash Ahir, 19, a resident of Bhagyashree Apartment in Maninagar, lodged a complaint with Maninagar police station against Raj Patel, Balwant Singh Punjabi and Karishma Kadam for assault on Thursday. Raj has already been arrested, while the other two are
absconding.

Yash is a first year BBA student at a Maninagar college. All the three accused and the complainant have been friends and were in class XI some years ago at a school in the area.

According to the complaint, on November 13, Yash and Balwant had gone to Maninagar railway station for tea, where they were joined by Raj and Karishma. The four had an argument over riding motorcycles, stated the complaint.

However, according to sources, the argument took place after the four allegedly indulged in illegal street bike racing, wherein Yash had emerged victorious and Raj lost. The bikers then decided on a ‘rematch’ the following day, but Yash did not turn up.

A few days later, on Wednesday, Karishma spotted Yash on his motorcycle at a petrol pump opposite the Rambaug police station, and confronted him about his absence for the ‘rematch’. A heated argument ensued which led to Karishma attacking him. Soon, Balwant too joined her in the assault.

The scuffle left Yash with severe injuries on the head. Meanwhile, some one from the crowd called the 108 emergency services, who rushed the bleeding youth to LG Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. He then registered a formal complaint against his ‘friends’.

When contacted by DNA, Yash’s mother said, “Having healthy arguments is not wrong among friends, but such an assault is not
warranted.”

According to Maninagar police inspector DM Chauhan, “We have already arrested Raj, and are on the lookout for the other two. We will investigate and verify the authenticity of the claim of illegal street racing.”
