Traffic cops have started installing CCTV cameras at some of the crucial traffic junctions in the city. These cameras will record the movements of commuters round the clock to check the flow of traffic as well as curb activities of anti-social elements.

The installation comes after various announcements by senior cops in recent times that there is  urgent need of such an arrangement.

According to traffic cops the process of installation has already begun at eight traffic intersections in the city which are always busy with commuters-Kalupur-Dilli Darwaja, Stadium Circle-Income Tax, Doordarshan Circle-Helmet Circle, Havmor-Gurudwara, Blind People's Association-Judges Bungalow, Nehrunagar-Shivranjani crossroads, Ellisbridge-Paldi crossroads and Raipur-Sarangpur crossroads-in the first phase.

Cops said that the exercise is being jointly undertaken by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the planning department of the traffic police. The state government owned Gujarat Narmada Fertilizer Corporation's arm nCode Solutions has also been roped in as consultant.

Sources said that the project is in the demo phase and will start operation within a couple of days for 15 days, said sources. After testing various technologies and their results, the final decision with regard to selection of technology and project cost will be taken, said sources.

Cops added that this is an important development as over the last several years, there have been a number of instances which have proved the installation of CCTV cameras could have cracked the crime on time.

The cameras will be handy in monitoring traffic violation such as red light violation, wrong side driving and rash driving.

Moreover, it will also help in surveillance as the cameras will use face detection, motion detection and abandon baggage detection
    technology, said sources.

"We have started installation of CCTV cameras at Havmor and Gurudwara crossroads and will be able to start operation within couple of days," said Niraj Sharma, senior manager of technologies at Sify Technology.
