Eleven people from the Beggars Colony were admitted to the Isolation Hospital at Old Madras Road with food poisoning symptoms on Wednesday morning. Three others were treated in the outpatient ward and sent back home.

A group of 2,500 people had food in the afternoon on August 15, at the rehabilitation centre in Beggars Colony, Sumanahalli, as part Independence Day celebrations.

All of them had a special dish, bisibelebath (Rice Bath). The rice was offered by a Marvadi businessman and the dish was prepared by cooks at the centre, sources said. At night, some beggars developed symptoms like vomiting and diarrhoea.

A staff from the rehabilitation centre said, “When the situation got worse, officials took the sick to the Isolation Hospital on Wednesday morning. The doctors attended to the patients.”

However, when DNA visited the hospital around 5.30 pm, there was no doctor or nurse to look after the patients. A nurse who was on duty said: “I don’t know about the condition of the patients. Our doctor has left for the day. Only he can talk about their condition.”
Mehboob, a patient, said that there were many people sick at the centre but the officials brought only a few people to the hospital.

Dr Shantha Kumar, who treated the patients, said he was not aware of what happened at the centre. “The patients came here around 11 am (on Wednesday). Of the 14 patients who were brought to the hospital, only 11 were very sick; the others were not admitted to the hospital.”

Dr Kumar said that his duty had finished at 2 pm. But, since a doctor had been transferred, the medical officer had asked him to work for a few hours more. “I left home around 5 pm since there were no patients,” he said.

The patients complained that there was no one to take care of them since the doctor had left. They, however, said that they were feeling better after being given the treatment in the morning.
