Ban same-gotra marriages: Khap Mahapanchayat

Demanding an amendment in the Hindu marriage act to ban marriages within the same gotra, a two-day long Khap Mahapanchayat was held in Muzzafarnagar.

The Khap Council heads in this meeting, that began yesterday in Soran village, opposed same gotra marriages and said such relations "will not be tolerated by the caste councils".

"Such marriages would harm brother-sister relationship and rakhi tradition," leader of Balyan Khap Council, Mahendra Singh Tikait said.

The heads of the different caste councils from Western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi are participating in this Khap Mahapanchayat.
