The opposition Congress in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has highlighted inefficiency of vigilance department of the civic body which has been unable to clear its long list of pending cases.

The party on Monday evening submitted a letter to municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra demanding appointment of an IPS officer as a chief vigilance officer to improve the department. The post has been lying vacant for eight years now.

As per the letter, the vigilance department has been unable to act on complaints registered with it against several departments and their officers. Suspended officers are enjoying this leeway, courtesy delay in inquiries against them.

"Complaints have been registered against a number of officials. The vigilance department took over these cases and inquiries have been going on in the same for years to know concrete results," said Badruddin Shaikh, leader of opposition in AMC.  Shaikh further highlighted how suspended officials are adding to financial burden of the civic body.

"A suspended official receives 50% of his salary during the first six months of his suspension, which increases to 75% after this duration. The longer the case continues, the more is the financial burden on AMC," said Shaikh. As many as 140 officials were served notices in 2011 and inquiries against them are still on, informed Shaikh.

"These officers should be proven guilty in six months and permanently suspended," he added.  The letter to the commissioner states how cases against Rakesh Milishia, assistant manager - Engineering department (project), and Pankaj Rathod, tax inspector - south zone are pending since 2009.
