As people celebrated Eid-e-Milad across the country on Sunday, around 5,000 women walked towards their self-reliance by participating in a walkathon in the city.

The walkathon was organised by International Centre for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (ICECD) to mark its 25th anniversary.

Flagged off by Governor Dr Kamla, the walkathon was preceded by National Anthem presented by the participants. The governor said, "Women in themselves are a complete identity. An event of this kind is a message to the people of Gujarat that women play a very significant role in the economic development of the nation."

The event highlighted how within our social structure and education system, top priority is given to seeking employment in the form of job. "Entrepreneurship is the answer to unemployment,'' said Heena Shah, chairman of ICECD.

The institute has made over one lakh women self-reliant across the country. By providing informal education and training to women like those from tribal areas, widows and homemakers, the institute makes them ready for the market. Of every 100 women who are trained by ICECD, at least 80 start their own business within three-four months.

The walkathon started at ATIRA ground and culminated at Gujarat Vidyapith ground.

A band accompanied the participants during the walkathon. Over 1,000 balloons were released, thereby indicating that the sky was the limit for these women.

Reema Bibi Mohammad Sheikh, who instead of celebrating Eid-e-Milad participated in the walkathon, said: "After receiving training from ICECD, I now make kite strings and run a small cutlery shop."

Shah said, "I am hoping that these 5,000 people will reach out to many others and ignite the minds of women that they can be self-reliant."

From the Handicap Association of Ahmedabad, 30 people — all men — participated in the event.
