The Diwali cleaning and the garbage left behind following bursting of fire crackers have rocketed the solid waste collection of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

The civic body has registered an additional increase of around 500 to 700 tonne of solid waste collection per day for the period from October 25 to November 5.

The solid waste and health department of the civic body collected around 2,964 tonne a day, the highest, during the period. This is around 700 tonne more than the average collection of 2300 tonne a day.

In fact, the solid waste collected by the department workers from October 25 to October 31 was around 20,164 tonne against the usual collection of around 16,100 tonne.

The solid waste taken to the Pirana dumping site is also used to make fertilizer and green fuel.
The garbage collected by the safai kamdars and contractors which reaches the landfill site in Pirana includes those collected from sweeping the streets, door to door garbage collection in residential as well as commercial units, kitchen waste from hotels and restaurants, waste from containers put on roads  and different garbage collection sites and construction and demolition debris.

"Ten days prior to Diwali festival, the garbage collection increased significantly,” said a senior official in the solid waste and health department.

“There was around 20% to 25% rise in garbage collection compared to other days. The collection would have had gone up during festival days but it didn't because the contractors and safai kamdars work half days and observe holiday till Labh Pancham," the official further said.

After Diwali (November 5), the collection dropped to 1,185 tonne on November 7- the lowest collection as the safai kamdars worked only half their usual time.
