Now we know why the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's green drive fails to yield results. The civic body proudly carries out tree plantation drive every year to help create a green Ahmedabad but lack of proper monitoring and laying of storm water drainage lines cut short the saplings lives. In fact, it is believed that 2.5 lakh saplings have been destroyed for lack of proper care and due to the laying of stormwater drainage lines.

Leader of opposition in the AMC, Surendra Baxi, claimed that the trees in Karnavati Upvan developed by the AMC have died because they are not watered regularly.

“Many trees that were planted on the roadside have been uprooted because of the stormwater drainage line work. On one hand the state government talks of saving environment while the AMC officials are busy destroying it by failing to take care of the planted saplings, said Baxi.  He demanded that a monitoring system be put in place to keep an eye on the growth of various saplings.

“The AMC is spending money on saplings and on contract to water the trees. But if officials bother to check, they will realize that most of the saplings have died,” said Baxi.

Baxi also found backing with BJP corporator from Vasna, Amit Shah, who often ridicules Congress' arguments. “The civic body had planted many trees in the area from Somnath to Vasna but they were uprooted to make way for the stormwater drainage line,” said Shah.  Meanwhile, the AMC's general board meeting as usual saw chaos with work files being thrown and Congress members getting gheraoed by BJP corporators.

The BJP corporators were irked after a Congress corporator commented that mayor Kanaji Thakore sleeps during many functions.

Liyaqat Ghori, a Congress corporator, in his speech said that the mayor often dozes off even when he is on the dais while attending certain functions.

This had the BJP up in arms and they demanded an apology from Ghori. As the BJP shouted anti-Congress slogans, the latter staged a walk out.

“I did not say anything unconstitutional and there is no need for apologies,” said Ghori.

The standing committee suspended Ghori for two months.
