Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to Chennai to attend the Anna centenary celebrations, the launch of a commemorative coin with the face of former Tamil Nadu CM CN Annadurai and Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi announcing the next World Tamil Summit in Coimbatore in 2010 were some of the issues Tamil dailies focused on in the past fortnight.

Dinamalar, Daily Thanthi, Dinamani, and Dinakaran gave prominence to the Anna centenary valedictory function. The dailies recalled how the Tamil Nadu government had launched the celebrations on September 15, 2008 to coincide with the centenary birth anniversary of the DMK founder. The valedictory function on September 15, 2009 on the occasion of the 101st birth anniversary of the late CM befittingly ended with the launch of a commemorative Rs5 coin, the dailies said.

“Karunanidhi is deemed the political younger sibling and heir of Annadurai, a man who strove for social reforms and autonomy of states. He has been carrying on the social legacy of the former CM and ensuring the upliftment of the downtrodden with the true meaning of social emancipation.

On the occasion of his 101st birth anniversary, Karunanidhi appealed Pranab to carry forward the issue of ensuring autonomy to states. Pranab praised Anna and called him a true parliamentarian and stalwart statesman of post-independence India,” Dinakaran, Dinamalar, Daily Thanthi and Dinamani reported in their exhaustive coverage of the event held at the Madras University’s Anna Memorial Hall.

The other issue which received significant coverage was the World Tamil Summit. The summit brings together the global Tamil population on a single platform.

“First held in 1966, such summits have subsequently been held in various countries with Tamil Nadu hosting the same on two other occasions. The first World Tamil Summit was inaugurated in Kuala Lumpur in 1967. From Annadurai to Jayalalithaa, CMs of Tamil Nadu have been fostering the summit, which has also been held in Paris and Mauritius.

Litterateurs, scribes and the Tamil Diaspora have been asking organisers to organise theevent in Tamil Nadu again. Hence, we have decided to host the 9th World Tamil Summit in Coimbatore from January-February 2010,” Dinamalar and Daily Thanthi quoted Karunanidhi as saying. Dinakaran and Dinamani carried Karunanidhi’s decision to host the World Tamil Summit as front page lead stories.
